Celebrating 20 years of the World Wide Web

13 March 2009

It has been 20 years since the concept of the World Wide Web was first proposed.

On 13 March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, an independent UK contractor working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Switzerland made a proposal to the organisation's management outlining how to better manage the flow of research information.

The proposed hypertext system eventually evolved in to the World Wide Web a few years later.

Research company Netcraft Ltd estimates that there are now over 180 million websites today.
