John Vorchak has been working in the software industry since 1986.
Q: Why did you decide to work in the software industry? What is your background working in the software industry?
At the time when I began working in the industry it was opportunity that led me into the field. I had a background with writing applications for myself and was simply hired by a company to produce an application for them. From there I expanded my interest in pursuing development professionally and have been working in the industry since.
Q: What work do you do/have you done in the software industry?
I am part of a small but robust team where I typically carry the load of customer interface and architect. We build applications for the web, desktop, and for mobile devices using the Microsoft .NET framework in order to help our customers to be able to become more effective in their business. By sticking with a focus on effectiveness it keeps us motivated to produce great work since we become very passionate about how we will help our customers.
Q: What advice would you give to people/businesses getting started in the software industry?
Do not get stuck in a cubicle! If you are truly serious about software development then work with a company where you can actually care about what you are producing. Too many of us get burned out because we are just droning along doing the same basic thing over and over.
Q: What is/are some of the greatest challenges facing people/companies in the software industry today?
Outsourcing is probably the largest challenge to overcome. The problem, as I see it is that typically there is a fairly good product that comes out of oursourcing but at a greatly reduced rate. It is a problem that is not easily fixed, nor should we just get rid of outsourcing, but instead we need to work with our customers to help them understand that there is a place for outsourcing and a place for a local approach to our business.
