Q: What work do you do/have you done in the software industry?
Joanna Lees Castro is owner of, a resource for software vendors wanting to grow their business strategy, marketing and sales capability in a services-oriented world. Joanna has held software/solutions marketing and consulting positions at industry leading companies in high technology for the past fifteen years. She has worked with software and services firms and enterprise companies of all sizes to help them leverage technology for business benefit... from guiding tiny software startups on web services during the dotcom boom, to delivering strategic IT consulting services to Fortune 100 global enterprises. She brings this breadth of experience in the software/services world and visibility into the direction of high technology to bear to assist firms in maximizing their product/service positioning to extract the most value possible from the business marketplace today and in the future.

Q: What advice would you give to people/businesses getting started in the software industry?
Spend some time to really think out-of-the-box about your business model: don't assume that a perpetual software license is always the way to go. There are a lot of options available now that may make growing your business easier: software-as-a-service, subscription licensing, etc. It's easier to get it right up-front than to have to change it mid-stream.
