Gary Barnes has been working in the software industry since 1988.
Q: Why did you decide to work in the software industry? What is your background working in the software industry?
Simply put, I love writing software. I think that software is somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle, except that I have to create all of the pieces, and often the final picture changes as the product evolves. So in essence, I end up finding the solution to puzzles all of the time, it is an ideal environment for me.
Q: What work do you do in the software industry?
I own and run a small business based in Western Australia. I provide a hardware and software design service that involves creating embedded microprocessor applications, and the Windows software that interfaces with them. Because of my long involvement with the electronics industry and the computer industry, I am able to tackle problems from the ground up (so to speak).
Q: What advice would you give to people/businesses getting started in the software industry?
Read and Research a lot ! When a client comes to you with a problem or a request for quotation, it isn't enough to simply look at the software. You need to spend time 'understanding' what the client really wants, because most of the time, what they say they want is completely different from what they need. So it is up to you to look in every direction and find out as much as possible about the client, and what they do.
Q: What is/are some of the greatest challenges facing people/companies in the software industry today?
I think that a biggie would be remaining conscious of the ever increasing variety of OS platforms. A substantial number of businesses are still using what some like to call 'legacy hardware and software'. It isn't legacy to them, it is what they make a living using. We have to be aware of this and be flexible enough to cope with it. Not to mention the constantly changing hardware and software standards that we all have to cope with.
